Job description
The position involves research in the social science project ”Social Stratification Dynamics– Inter- and intragenerational processes”, www.sofi.su.se/english/sunstrat, financed through the Swedish Initiative for Research on Microdata in the Social and Medical Sciences (SIMSAM).
The position is for the period September 1 2012 to August 31 2014 or as otherwise agreed. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to carry out independent research, collaborate with other project members, contribute to the development of register-based research within the area of social stratification, and to take part in other activities within the project.
The project ”Social Stratification Dynamics” is administered at SOFI and coordinated by Associate Professor Erik Bihagen. The overarching goal is to produce high quality register-based research on the dynamics of social stratification. Research topics within the program include mobility to, from, and between extreme positions (labor market elite and poverty), income mobility, class and mortality, as well as processes of occupational and educational attainment.
Salaries are commensurate with those for Assistant Professors in Sweden but may be adjusted based on an applicant’s individual experience and merits.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have a PhD level academic degree received after April 2008 and be fluent in both spoken and written English. They are expected to be able to conduct methodologically advanced research (using quantitative methods) and publish in international refereed journals. Employment criteria include the degree to which the applicant’s research plan supports the project’s overall goals. Previous experience in register-based research is a merit but not a requirement.
The work place
SOFI is widely acknowledged as a significant contributor to international research on socioeconomic inequality, social policy and labour market economics. SOFI works in close collaboration with the Sociology and Economics departments at Stockholm University and numerous universities and research institutions worldwide. The institute is regularly visited by leading international scholars and the language at seminars is English. Besides a growing interest in using register data, SOFI has maintained and developed one of the earliest large social surveys, including a longitudinal sample spanning 40 years.
