PhD Studentships - The University of Sheffield

Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Development of New Magnetic Materials (Accelerated Metallurgy)

A research studentships is available in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/materials/) at the University of Sheffield (http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/) to look at new magnetic materials. With an increasing push for greater efficiency in electrical machines and drives, the need for further improvements in both bulk hard and soft magnetic materials remains. This drive is further complicated by the ongoing uncertainty over global supply or rare earth elements currently essential to hard magnetic materials. The leading materials rely on subtle magnetic interactions driven by their microstructures. This project will look to search out new alloy compositions, and novel fabrication routes, to offer alternatives to the present range of magnetic alloys. The project will be supervised by Professor Michael Gibbs (http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/materials/staff/mrgibbs) and Dr Russell Goodall (www.sheffield.ac.uk/materials/staff/rgoodall). The funding can provide tuition fees and stipend support for EU students for 3 years of doctoral research.

The project is one of the studentships at Sheffield contributing to the Accelerated Metallurgy programme; this is a large-scale research collaboration, co-ordinated by the European Space Agency. It is a 22 M€ project, funded by the European Commission, with 31 partners across Europe, 16 of whom are companies with an interest in exploiting the alloys discovered. The aim of a programme as large as this has to be similarly ambitious; it seeks to speed up the discovery and implementation of new metallic alloys by producing a wide range of alloy compositions and testing for many properties in a short time duration.

Applicants should have a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours degree in Materials Science or a related subject, or have an appropriate MSc qualification. You should apply through the normal application procedures for PhD students at Sheffield (http://www.shef.ac.uk/postgraduate/online.html) and clearly state your interest in this project, for the attention of Prof Gibbs. The preferred start date for the studentships will be in October 2012, although candidates wishing to start at other times will be considered.

Closing Date: 31st December 2012
