Senior lecturer in energy technology with emphasis on sustainable energy


Gotland University, with a campus in the middle of the World Heritage city of Visby, is a meeting place for academia, culture and business. Inspired by the Liberal Education tradition, we offer quality education with the goal of creating independent and flexible university graduates empowered with broad knowledge. Our new educational model places the students distinctly in the centre and offers them the opportunity to create their own educational path. The model involves inter-disciplinary learning, close interaction with community and sense of social responsibility. It contains a combination of thorough subject-specific studies with a continuous focus on key competencies that will make the student well prepared for today’s increasingly changing professional and social life. Sustainable development education, regional cooperation and international exchange are central parts of the university policy. Gotland University and Uppsala University have signed a letter of intent regarding a proposed merger of the universities. A decision regarding the proposed merger will be presented to the Government in the spring of 2012.

 

There are currently fourteen persons working in the field of energy technology at Gotland University. We are now looking for an Senior lecturer in energy technology with emphasis on sustainable energy.

 

Duties:
Your employment responsibilities will consist of research and teaching. The academic program offers a broad energy technology spectrum with a focus on wind power and sustainable energy. You will be involved in development and implementation of course curriculum including some administration. You are expected to contribute to research development by seeking external funding.

 

Qualifications
The applicant shall have a background in sustainable energy systems, preferably with a focus on wind power and in a wider context issues that involve planning and climate change. 

 

As a teacher at Gotland University you are expected to actively participate in the goal of implementing the new educational model. You shall have a genuine interest in education, and practical applications. You are also expected to show deep commitment to the students and one of your duties will be to function as an advisor and mentor during the student’s learning process.

 

Teaching is both in English and Swedish. Non-Swedish speaking applicants are expected to learn Swedish.

 

Eligibility requirements
To be qualified for appointment as Senior lecturer you must:

1. hold a doctorate degree or corresponding academic competency,
2. have higher education pedagogical training or in another way achieved comparable qualifications,
3. have demonstrable academic teaching skills,

 

Evaluation criteria
4. Teaching experience in Swedish and/or English is a merit. Knowledge of Swedish is an advantage. Extensive and broad expertise in sustainable energy, particularly in the area of wind power and its environmental impact, as well as knowledge of other renewable energy sources is of special importance. Since the course program is interdisciplinary, subject area knowledge in wind power planning and design is desirable. International and industrial experience is of merit. Supervisor experience of research and theses work is also a benefit. Thorough knowledge of English is required.

- Brief summary of your academic, pedagogic and administrative experience.
- A statement outlining your pedagogic philosophy and intentions regarding teaching and research within the subject area of the application
- Certified copies of grades, certificates and degrees.

 

All documents should be supplied in triplicate.

Current subject area activities
The activities in the energy technology area consist of campus teaching and distance education, research, development projects and contract education. Energy technology is a focus and development area at Gotland University. In addition, Gotland University is responsible for development and competence issues within the Swedish national network for wind farms.

 

Campus education today consists of an international ”One-year Master Program in Wind Power Project Management”. The program is a unique combination of technical subjects and topics central to the planning and design of wind power projects, such as economics, law, project management, planning and more. Education on campus is planned to expand with a new Bachelor program wherein sustainable energy will be a central part.

 

The subject area has been part of comprehensive distance education in wind power for about ten years.

 

Today extensive research in the area of fluid mechanics is conducted with wide international collaboration. The area is central to the teaching section where, for example, optimization of large wind farms is of special importance.  Research in related areas is being developed through an interdisciplinary effort. Examples of related subjects include cultural geography, biology, ethnology, law and economics. Presently the largest related subject area is within spatial planning and support processes for wind power sites.
