Postdoctoral fellow in Ultrasound gas leak detection at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Engineering and Safety
Application deadline: 23.02.12
The following reference number must be quoted in your application: 2012/200
The University of Tromsø has a position vacant as postdoctoral fellow in electrical engineering.
The position of postdoctoral fellow position is for a fixed term of 2 years.
For further information, please contact: Jarle Andre Johansen, Tel. + 47 77 66 03 33, email: jarle.johansen@uit.no.
The Faculty of Science and Technology consists of the following departments: Department of Physics and Technology, Department of Geology, Department of Computer Science, Department of Chemistry, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and Department of Engineering and Safety.
The position is part of the project "Subsea sensors for oil and gas”, funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project is divided into 5 work packages. The position is organized under the Department of Engineering and Safety, which leads work package 2, "Ultrasound gas leak detection”.
The work package primary objective is to do research and development on instrument prototypes capable of detecting gas leakages at deep sea conditions (down to 350 m or more). Our aim is to develop ultrasonic systems that can detect smaller gas quantities than today’s available commercial systems. Secondary objectives are to build up two complementary test facilities for transducers and bubble detection systems, and furthermore to develop necessary electronics for detector prototypes. An ongoing Ph.D. project in this work package focuses on the experimental setup, measurement techniques, and prototyping.
The proposed research project will focus on the experimental activities for active and passive acoustic and ultrasonic methods for subsea gas leak detection. We are thus seeking applicants with relevant experimental background, but also candidates with a strong knowledge within relevant numerical simulations and theory will be considered. A background in underwater acoustics, ultrasonic or related fields is required.
The successful applicant must be able to immediately contribute scientifically in research planning, execution, and documentation in terms of scientific publications, within the project.
A doctoral degree is a prerequisite for appointment in the position of postdoctoral fellow. A Norwegian doctoral degree within physics, electrical engineering, or an equivalent foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.
The successful applicant must be willing to engage herself/himself in the ongoing development of her/his discipline and the university as a whole.
The working time will be set aside for research, research-related activities and research administration. Appointment for more than one fixed term period as postdoctoral fellow at the same institution is not permitted. Regulations concerning redundancy pay cannot be included in the fixed term work contract.
Remuneration for the position of postdoctoral fellow is in accordance with the State wage scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2 % will be made to the State Pension Fund.
The main objective of appointments to positions of postdoctoral fellows is to qualify the appointee for employment in scientific top positions.
Applications must be accompanied by a proposal for the qualifying work and shall include a work schedule. Appointments are made on the understanding that the appointee shall complete her/his project within the contract term.
A plan shall be drawn up showing how the project that forms the basis for the appointment in the position of postdoctoral fellow shall be implemented. The plan shall form part of (an appendix to) the employment contract for the fixed term and shall cover the project description and work schedule. The plan shall also state who is responsible for providing academic supervision. The person responsible for providing academic supervision and the employee both have a duty to report to the employer in case of inadequate implementation of the plan.
Applications will be assessed by an expert committee. The main emphasis will be placed on assessment of the submitted scientific works and the proposal for the qualifying work.
Information and material to be considered must be submitted by the deadline for applications. Details of references must be provided.
The applicant must submit a list of all her/his scientific work including details of publication.
The application is to be submitted electronically on the application form available at this page.
In addition, the application, including CV, certified copies of diplomas and references, form regarding teaching qualifications (if applicable) and the list of scientific work are to be sent in four copies, by the deadline for applications, directly to:
