Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Graphical Interfaces

The Department of Applied IT is carrying out research and education within the complete milieus Informatics, Learning and Visualization. As part of both Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg the research is encompassing many different disciplines with high relevance for the community. The education is characterized by the interplay between people, people and technology as well as technology’s relation to organizations and the surrounding community.

Just over a hundred members of staff work at the department in one of the research and educational milieus. The department is located at Campus Lindholmen and has close co operations with industry and the public sector.

The  position is within the interaction design division where current research concerns for instance: ubiquitous computing, computer game design and game design patterns, aesthetics of computational technology as a design material, information visualization and intelligent user interfaces as well as multi modal and tangible user interfaces.

Interaction design is focused on the development of interactive artifacts where ICT is a central component. The field has its roots in human-computer interaction but has grown to include design of user interfaces with advanced visualizations and interactive simulations and games. Interaction design is a multidisciplinary field where knowledge from programming, electronics, aesthetics, cognitive science, graphical design, and psychology all play roles and collaboration over disciplinary boundaries is common. Regardless of the intended area of use, the design of interaction between people and technologies requires a holistic perspective incorporating aspects of software engineering as well as industrial and product design.

Job description
The post is a full-time tenured appointment. Job responsibilities include developing and conducting research and teaching within the more design related fields of interaction design, in particular teaching at the Interaction design and Technologies master’s program that requires a specialization within graphic interface design, aesthetics of interaction, or both. The position includes teaching at all levels, from undergraduate to postgraduate. It also includes supervision of PhD students and administrative and management duties. The applicant should be able to collaborate with industrial, academic, and governmental partners and also be capable of successfully applying for external grants for the research. The applicants own research and the PhD students are financed primarily with external grants.

Qualifications
To be qualified, the applicant should have a PhD degree in interaction design or similar, as well as documented pedagogical experience in this field. To be appointed Associate Professor, the applicant must have been qualified for the Swedish docent level (in Swedish "oavlönad docent”). If the applicant has not yet reached that qualification level, the position is designated Senior Lecturer. In that case the applicant is expected to become "oavlönad docent" within a few years and is then promoted to Associate Professor.

The program educates students to work in the industry, thus industrial experience from working as an interaction designer is considered a strong advantage. The students at the Masters level are taught in English and the undergraduate courses are normally taught in Swedish. Thus good language skills are required. Applicants who do not have Swedish as native language must be able to teach in Swedish after two years of employment.

Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20120006 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically and be attached as three pdf-files, as below:

  1. Application:
    - a first page containing name, reference number and a list of all documents that have been enclosed,
    - description of the applicant's research and pedagogical qualifications, as well as other qualifications. Please use the format of the Pedagogical Portfolio when you
      summarize your pedagogical qualifications,
    - CV,
    - complete list of publications,
    - plans for future work, both scientific and educational
    - two reference persons who can be contacted by Chalmers (describe association with them and give their contact addresses).
  2. A letter of application detailing your specific qualifications for the position
  3. Publications:
    - copies of the applicant's best scientific publications (not more than 10),
    - copies of a maximum of 10 other publications (such as pedagogy, and popular science) in support of pedagogical and other merits.

Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form. The files may be compressed (zipped).
