Ph. D. position: Cell Cycle Characteristics of Archaea

At the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Uppsala University, beginning autumn 2012.

The Archaea research group is focused on elucidating regulatory and mechanistic features of the main cell cycle processes (chromosome replication, genome segregation, cell division) in organisms from the third domain of life.  Most of the model species thrive at high temperature (80 - 90°C; hyperthermophiles) and consequently display a series of unique properties, both in terms of function and composition of different cell components, as well as regarding evolutionary trajectories and environmental adaptations.

The main focus of the Ph.D. project will concern experimental studies of transcriptional regulation of cell cycle processes.  The student will also contribute to other ongoing projects, including characterization of previously isolated mutants, biochemical and structural studies of purified cell cycle proteins, and analyses of large-scale datasets from high throughput sequencing of cDNA and genomic DNA.

We are looking for applicants holding a masters degree within microbiology, molecular biology or similar, with a strong interest in basic research. It is particularly important that the applicant has a keen interest in performing laboratory work, as the main part of the project will rest on obtaining solid experimental results. Experience and competence in microbiological, molecular and functional genomics methodology and techniques are, consequently, crucial, in combination with excellent theoretical grades. The applicant should also display proficiency in collaborating with other researchers with complementary skills, both at the national and international level.

The position also encompasses departmental duties, usually teaching, at a maximal level of 20%. General information about Ph.D. studies at the faculty of Technology and Life Sciences is available at: http://www.teknat.uu.se/doktorand/.

The application should contain a general personal background, Curriculum Vitae, copies of grades and exams, as well as a copy of the master thesis and other documents the applicant wishes to refer to. Of particular relevance is documentation of previous experimental work. Letters of recommendation from previous research supervisors are also valuable.

Applications should be submitted at the latest on June 30 2012, reference number UFV-PA 2012/865.
