Associate, alternatively assistant professorship in Prehistoric Archaeology
 
The SAXO Institute, Faculty of Humanities, Copenhagen University, Denmark invites applications for an associate, alternatively assistant professorship in Prehistoric Archaeology with special respect to Stone Age be filled by 1 August 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter.


Job content
 
Assistant Professor
An assistant professorship is a three-year, fixed-term academic position involving research and teaching. The person appointed to the post will be obliged to complete a course in university teaching devised especially for assistant professors, and is expected to be able to take part in all the activities of the Department, including examinations and administration. At the end of the three-year period, provided the appropriate funding is secured, a post as associate professor will be advertised for which the assistant professor may apply.
 
With regard to the position as assistant professor, the applicant must have a Ph.D. or its equivalent within the area advertised. Furthermore, applicants who have teaching experience at university level will be at an advantage.
 
Associate professor
An associate professorship is a permanent position. The associate professor is expected to be able to take part in all the activities of the Department, including examinations and administration, and also manage research projects, provide pedagogic supervision, supervise assistant professors and participate in academic assessment panels.
 
When appointing a candidate to the post as associate professor, we stress that the applicant must have research and teaching qualifications corresponding to what can be achieved as part of a successful employment as an assistant professor.

Qualification requirements
 
Both categories
The applicant must document research and publication in Stone Age in Europe and/or the North Atlantic area.
 
Further emphasis will be placed on the applicant´s ability to demonstrate originality as well as theoretical and methodological reflection. Furthermore, it is desirable that the applicant has participated in or organized research collaboration, preferably as international cooperation. Furthermore, it is desirable that the applicant is able to contribute to an expansion of the present field of archaeology at the Saxo Institute, either in respect to geographical area or methodical approach.
 
The candidate must be willing to and qualified for taking care of course planning and teaching at bachelor classes, including the classes dealing with the Prehistory of Denmark and Northern Europe.
 
Emphasis will be placed on the applicant´s ability to document teaching qualifications at academic level, especially concerning teaching methods that include active participation of the students.
 
The successful candidate must participate in various activities on a daily basis in the Archaeology Section and at the Saxo Institute generally. Furthermore, the candidate must be willing to participate in interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration.
 
Within a reasonable period of time (max. 2 years), non-Danish-speaking applicants are expected to acquire proficiency in Danish sufficient to teach as well as interact with colleagues and students.
 
Furthermore emphasis is placed on the following professional qualifications and personal competences:
 
Assistant Professor
•    Research qualifications, which will be assessed in relation to the period of active research and the degree of originality and production
•    The applicant´s scientific record, academic breadth and depth, rigour, thoroughness and accuracy as well as academic relevance in relation to the advertisement for the position
•    Documented teaching qualifications, including the ability to conduct teaching in Danishand/or English
•    Documented administrative qualifications
•    Participation in networks - national and international
 
 
Associate Professor
 •    Research qualifications, which will be assessed in relation to the period of active research and the degree of originality and production

•    Documented teaching qualifications, including the ability to conduct teaching in Danishand/or English

•    Appendix 3: Complete and numbered list of publications. The enclosed publications must be marked with *.
•    Appendix 4: Research plan, including a short description of previous research and a plan for the coming years that includes an account of involvement in organising research, establishment of research seminars, symposia and congresses, etc.
•    Appendix 5: Documentation of teaching qualifications and research dissemination (organisation of classes, materials, courses and other forms of teaching).
•    Appendix 6: Publications. Applicants may choose a maximum of five publications for assessment, of which at least three of the selected works must have been published within the five years immediately preceding the deadline for applications. Publication dates must be clearly marked on the publication list. The publications selected must be uploaded as attachments and named from 1 to 5.
 
 
Only material in English, German, French, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish will be assessed.
 
All material will be shredded at the end of the appointment procedure.
 
Appointment procedure
After the application deadline, the Dean will set up an expert assessment committee to evaluate applicants specifically in relation to the advertised position. The applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each candidate will have the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment relating to themselves before the appointment is finalised. Salary and conditions of employment
The post will be filled according to the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
